Fat-tire bikes are gaining in popularity as the two-wheelers of choice for winter riding and a variety of off-road cycling. These bikes have a strong Minnesota connection. Surly, the company that created the Pugsley, the first mass-produced fat-tire bike, is based in Bloomington.

Winter Bike Expo Saturday marks kickoff of winter cycling season

MINNEAPOLIS – The second annual Winter Bike Expo will be at the Freewheel Midtown Bike Center. While the expo offers everything from highlights of cycling-specific outerwear to the opportunity to pedal the latest generation of fat tire “fatbikes” designed for all-terrain and all-season riding, the expo’s primary mission is to offer a venue for cyclists of all persuasions to celebrate the onset of winter riding.

Dave Pramann, multiple Arrowhead 135 champion, is presenting techniques for surviving the most brutally cold bike race outside of Alaska. In addition, experts from across all cycling disciplines are presenting seminars on winter bike camping, cutting-edge cycling outerwear, winter commuting, and more.

Expo attendees can take advantage of fatbike test rides and studded tire demonstrations throughout the day on the outdoor demo course. Representatives from Surly Bikes, Salsa Cycles, Trek Bikes, Gore Bike Wear, 45NRTH, Pearl Izumi, Bontrager, Shimano, SRAM, Louis Garneau, and Lazer Helmets will be on site to answer questions about the specialized equipment for winter cyclists. New to the Winter Bike Expo this year is a concept bike gallery, featuring full suspension fatbikes and a never-before-seen carbon fatbike.

The expo concludes with the second edition of the Superfat Crit, a fatbike-only bike race held on a course designed to highlight the efficacy of their super-wide tires. This flashy spectacle of athletic prowess and radical bike technology is a crowd favorite for Expo attendees.

The Winter Bike Expo is presented by Freewheel Bike. Founded in Minneapolis in 1974, Freewheel Bike is a nationally recognized leader in the bicycle industry. This locally-owned, independent business is heralded as a seven-time top 100 dealer, and their newest location in Eden Prairie was recently presented with the Best New Bike Shop Award by Bicycle Retailer & Industry News. Over the past five years, Freewheel Bike has grown into one of the country’s largest sellers of studded bicycle tires and fat tire snow bikes. As participation in cold weather cycling activities expands across the country, the Winter Bike Expo is stepping into spotlight as the national kickoff event to the winter cycling season.
